Jaguar XJ6, XJ12 and XJR Service and Repair
Motorcars Ltd was founded in 1972 right in the middle of the British car hey-day…. people were actually driving these cars to work every day… and when we started, we quickly realized that the Jaguar XJ6’s and XJ12’s needed routine maintenance along with the other British classics we were servicing. It was a pretty crazy time – we performed full restorations on MGTC’s and XK120’s and maintained daily drivers of XJ6’s and XJ12’s – at one point, we had over 12 full restorations in progress!
A Closer Look At The Jaguar XJ6, XJ12 and XJR Models
Jaguar XJ6 (Series 1) and XJ12 (Series 1)
Jaguar simplified its saloon line-up in 1968 and introduced the XJ6 in 4.2 in the U.S. market. The saloon gained the 5.3 iter V12 in 1972. Available as a Vanden Plas or Daimler Double Six, the XJ12 was the fastest production 4-seater in the world.
Jaguar XJ6 (Series 2) and XJ12 (Series 2)
1973 saw a mildly remodeled Series II XJ6 hit the road. Soon thereafter, Jaguar offered a pair of stylish two-door hard-tops, the XJ6C and XJ12C coupes. The Series II car ended production at the end of 1976.
Jaguar XJ6 (Series 3) and XJ12 (Series 3)
In 1977 Jaguar launched the XJ6 Series III. Still powered by the seemingly bulletproof 4.2 liter XK engine, many enthusiasts believe it to be been the most beautifully styled four-door sedan ever. The Series III had the longest production run, ending in 1987.
Jaguar XJ6 (XJ40) and XJ12 (XJ40)
Jaguar introduced the new XJ40 body with AJ6 engine in Europe in 1986 and the U.S. in late 1987 available as an XJ6, Sovereign, Majestic, or Vanden Plas. Some markets continued to receive the Series III XJ12. The XJ12, known as the Daimler Double Six in Europe, re-emerged with a 6.0 liter V12 in 1993 in the XJ40 body.
Since our founding in 1972, Motorcars Ltd has maintained literally hundreds of the Jaguar XJ40. Motorcars Ltd was in full operation in the hey-day of the XJ40 sedans. We have literally grown up with these cars coming and going in our shops.
Jaguar XJR (X300)
Jaguar rolled out the new X300 body in 1995 available as an XJ6, Sovereign, Sport, and Vanden Plas. 1995 also saw the introduction of the first supercharged Jaguar, the XJR.
The XJR featured 17 inch wheels, firmer suspension, a mesh grille and body colored grill surround. The power output increased to 326 horsepower.
Jaguar Long Wheelbase X330
Midway through the 1995 model year a long wheel base version was introduced. It was designated the X330 chassis, and was stretched an extra six inches along with another inch of head room, making for a much more comfortable rear seat passenger. This made the XJ6L an executive-carpool favorite.
XJ12 X305
The XJ12 was only available in the U.S. market in 1995 and 1996. All of the 1995 models were SWB cars and all 1996 cars were LWB. The XJ12 had trouble meeting the EPA standards for OBD II diagnostics which probably led to its exit from the U.S. market.
Since our founding in 1972, Motorcars Ltd has maintained thousands of Jaguar XJ6, Jaguar XJ12 and Jaguar XJR cars. Motorcars Ltd was in full operation in the hey-day of the XJ6 Series 1, XJ6 Series 2, XJ6 Series 3, XJ6 XJ40 and the XJ6 X300 sedans. We have literally “grown up” with these cars coming and going in our shops.
Motorcars Ltd takes great pride in keeping the Jaguar XJ6, Jaguar XJ12 and Jaguar XJR’s on the road. Motorcars Ltd offers full maintenance, repair and service on both the the Jaguar XJ6 and XJ12. We no longer perform “full restorations”, but we do provide restoration quality maintenance and repair services routinely. On any given day we will have 3 or 4 or 5 Jaguar XJ6 and XJ12’s in our repair facility undergoing a variety of customer requests and repairs.
Whether it is a simple carburetor rebuild, fuel injection service, cylinder head work or engine rebuild (yes, we even have our own machine shop) or brake replacement or repair, Motorcars Ltd has the facilities, tools and staff to perform to exacting standards.
